Layers Palette

Menu -> View -> Layers Palette

An image with several layers.
The Layer 2 is selected.

The Layers allow you to work on one element of an image without disturbing the others. Think of layers as sheets of acetate stacked one on top of the other. You can see through transparent areas of a layer to the layers below. You can change the composition of an image by changing the order of layers. The number of additional layers you can add to an image is limited only by your computer's memory.
The Layers Palette lists all layers in an image as individual thumbnails. These thumbnails reflect any editing that you apply to the layers. Each thumbnail is numbered sequentially by the order in which it was created. You can use the Layers Palette to create new layers, delete layers, show or hide layers and change their orders. You can access additional options into the Layers Palette popup menu and thus rename the layers. The Layers Palette can be docked into the right border of the main window.
